Anomalia do cacaueiro con sintomas semelhantes aos causados por vírus

Disease transmission tests, electron and light microscopy, host range, purification and sorological tests were carried out in cacao trees (Theobroma cacao L.) in the Itapebi country, Bahia, Brazil. The trees, affected by an abnormality with virus like symptoms were one to 60 years old. The symptoms included chlorotic and translucent spots on the leaves which appeared deformed, twisted, curled, often small and with marginal necrosis. Affected plants showed internod shortening and abnormal growth of axilary buds causing broom formation. Disease transmission tests throught grafting were positive but mechanical inoculations and those by insects were negative. Attempts at purifications were unsuccesful, just as the visualizations of viral particles and virus-induced alterations (inclusions) were negative by electron and light microscopy. Sorological tests using cacao yellow masaic virus and cauliflower mosaic virus anti-sera against leaf extracts of diseased plants showed no reactions. Stereoscopic bud examinations revealed the presence of Eriophyidae mites.
