A casca fresca do fruto do cacaueiro como substituto do capim elefante no acabamento de novilhos em confinamento

Some results are reported of an evaluation of cacao (Theobroma cacao L.) husks as a possible substitute for elephant grass cv Cameroon (Pennisetum purpureum Schum) in the ration of finishing confined steers. The elephant grass was gradually replaced with the fresh husks. Average live weight gains of the steers showed no significant difference (P major 0.05) as the cacao husk content of the ration increased to maximum (100 percent). Average daily dry matter intake was similar in the six treatments, indicating the acceptance of the fresh cacao husks. No deleterious effects were noted in the animal.
