Avaliacao de métodos para determinacao da resistencia do cacaueiro (Theobroma cacao) a podridao-parda

Two methods of inoculation were compared as to their efficiency for detecting levels of resistance in cacao clones to black pod disease. Detached and attached pods from PA 30 and 81, BE 5 and 9, EEG 64 and SIC 864 clones were inoculated with Phytophthora citrophthora as it presents different degrees of virulence to various cacao cultivars. Results from both methods were not statistically significant although the detached fruits showed greater susceptibility mainly with clones SIC 864. Two variables, namely percentage of infected fruits and average number of days for lesions to cover all the fruit surface, were not suitable for comparison and presented high coefficient of variation. The other variables - visual ranking, average diameter of lesion and area index 1 and 2 - had common reactions and were suitable for the evaluation and selection procedures. The visual ranking is recommended as a reliable variable for assessment of black pod resistance of cacao germplasm.
