Preservacao e utilizacao dos recursos genéticos de cacau na Amazonia Brasileira

The Brazilian Amazon contains one of the most extensive reserves of genetic variability of cacao and will provide a rich treasure for the species. The nature of this variability became apparent following expeditions undertaken in 1965 and 1967 and the scale of dispersion of the species was confirmed by explorations made from 1976. In 1979 CEPLAC inaugurated a systematic programme of the conservations of these rich resources through collecting in various zones of the Amazon valley. The collections in the subsequent years were concentrated in the States of Acre and Rondonia and along the Solimoes River and its tributaries where the vast and varied dispersal of the species was demonstrated. Collections made in areas where the occurrence of cacao is less important also show significant differences between populations. After propagation the material collected is maintained in a germplasm bank belonging to the programme and located near the city of Belem. The evaluation of the material currently established begun in 1982. This constitutes a continuous activity accompanying the development of the plants and the accumulation of genotypes by the prosecution of the collecting programme. The individuals from the first expeditions are being evaluated for their potential as parents for hybrid varieties and used for obtaining new recombinants through inbreeding and hybridization techniques. Some of these genotypes have already shown promise in their use as parents.
