Examination of the effect of cocoa shells and theobromine in lambs

The effect of theobromine and cocoa shell on growth and food consumption was evaluated in a side-by-side experimental design as both a potential feed supplement and an appetite stimulant. Cocoa shell and theobromine were supplemented to rations at 0, 4.63, 9.25, 13.87 and 18.50 percent of the diet and 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 percent respectively and fed for a period of 98 days. In the case of the shell, the substitutions were done at the expense of the expense of the hay and corn to provide isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets to all treatments. Levels of 4.63 and 9.25 percent cocoa shell and 0.05 and 0.10 percent theobromine were found to stimulate food intake (P minor or equal 0.05) and growth in lambs on these rations. Feeding excess levels of theobromine (0.15 and 0.20 percent) and cocoa shell (13.87 and 18.50 percent) resulted in a depression in food intake and weight gain. The results indicate that feeding properly formulated rations containing cocoa shell and theobromine is beneficial to enhancing growth in lambs by stimulating overall food intake.
