Avaliacao da transpiracao do cacaueiro através de variacoes na umidade do solo

The transpiration of water by cacao trees was determined by the changes of soil moisture content. A plot containing six 10-year old trees was isolated by a trench 0.70 m wide and 2.00 m deep. The ground, Cepec soil (Typic Tropudalf) was saturated with water; then the ground and the walls of the trench were covered with sheets of black polyethylene to preven evaporation and the growth of algae and weeds. Soil samples for moisture determination were taken at 30, 50 and 100 cm from each cacao trunk and at depths of 0 - 30 cm, 30 - 60 cm and 60 - 90 cm. The first samples were taken 2 days after saturation; subsequent samples were taken weekly for 8 weeks. In the first week losses of water by transpiration were substantial at all distances and depths; in the second week the loss was greater only at the 100 cm distance. A gradual reduction in the average transpirations is observed at the various distances. The water transpirated by the cacao tree in the first week after soil saturation corresponded to a layer measuring 45 cm.day-1, by the eighth week this layer measured 3.4 cm.day-1
