O papel das abelhas sem ferrao (Meliponinae) na polinizacao do cacaueiro na América Tropical

The following bees i.e. Tetragona jaty (Smith), Nannotrigona testaceicornis punctata (Smith), Paratrigona lineata subnuda Moure and Plebeia mosquita (Smith) have been recorded in the literature as cacao flower visitors in Bahia. In Costa Rica, Trigona jaty Sm., T. testaceicornis Sm. Lep., T. pallida Latr. and T. coryina Ckll. have been recorded as main visitors of cacao flowers. Pollination by all these bees has been considered according to the literature, accidental and inadequate as judged by the very low numbers of pollen grains deposited on the stigmata. On the other hand flowers pollinated by Forcipomyia spp. in cages had a far higher number of pollen grains (175 average) on the stigma than is necessary for proper fertilization (30-40 ovules) of a cacao flower. In addition, pollen grains recovered from the hind legs of the bees rendered a very low percentage of germination (24 per cent). As a consequence of this information there is a general agreement among authors in considering the Forcipomyia spp. midges the main pollinators of Theobroma cacao L. in Tropical America
