Ocorrencia de mosquitos e maruins em cacaual baiano, Brasil: observacoes sobre o método de captura e altura de voo

The objectives in this work were to determine the mosquitoes (Diptera, Culicidae) and the midges (Diptera, Ceratopogonidae) of medical and veterinary importance occurring in the cacao agro-ecosystem of the South of Bahia, Brazil, to evaluate the method of capture using suction traps and to record some observations on the height of flight within the cacao plantation. Results indicated 19 species within 11 genera identified. Culex, Trichoprosopon, Wyemyia and Aedes, listed in decreasing order of frequency, were genera, among others, known as nuisances within the cacao plantations, particularly during winter (June, July and August). Eight species of Culicoides Latreille (Ceratopogonidae), known because their habits of sucking blood of humans, wild vertebrates and livestock, were also determined. Culicoides paraensis is known as a nuisance pest in the cacao plantations of Para, Brazil. This species was not aggressive in the South of Bahia. The relationship insect/pathogen was not and objective of this study. The method of capture using Johnson & Taylor automatic suction traps proved to be efficient in the measurement of population fluctuations. Mosquitoes and Culicoides were more frequent above the canopy level of the cacao plantation (6 meters) than under it (2 meters)
