Fertiliser experiments on farmers' cocoa South Western Nigeria
Long-term fertiliser trials have shown that cocoa on the Basement Complex soils of South-Western Nigeria mainly responds to applications of nitrogen and phosphorus. Calculations have demonstrated that with the use of fertilisers an additional annual net income of N6-12 pound sterling per acre or more can be obtained. The fact that the lightly shaded and unshaded cocoa of Nigeria responds to nitrogen is in line with the general hypothesis that unshaded cocoa requires nitrogen for high yields (3). The positive reaction to phosphorus can be explained from the phosphorus status of most cocoa soils. Soil and leaf analyses are of limited value for assessing N requirements but can fairly accurately determine the P requirements of the crop
