Pesquisa sobre a polinização do cacaueiro por insetos na Bahia

A research programme to investigate the bioecology of the cacao pollinating midge Forcipomyia spp. is being conducted in Bahia, Brasil. A number of sub-genera of Forcipomyia spp. are indicated as candidates for pollination, but definitive evidence of their pollinating ability is lacking. A study of some organic substrates present in the cacao plantation revealed that pod husk heaps provided the best substrate with regard to species diversity and total number of insects collected, while leaf-litter was an important breeding place for the sub-genera Forcipomyia and Atrichopogon sp. Rotting fruit of the shade tree, Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam. and rotting banana pseudo-caule were also Ceratopogonid breeding sites. Epiphytic bromeliads may be an important breeding place for the pollinating sub-genus Proforcipomyia. Ceratopogonid leaf-litter populations seem to be influenced by the amount of soil water present, the population increasing when the soil is water-saturated. The leaf-litter population peak was from June to August, during which period flowering is poor or nonexistent. The high flowering peak of December and January was associated with a low Ceratopogonid population. The orders Homoptera, including Toxoptera aurantii B. de Fonsc., Cicadellidae and Coccoidea, and Hymenoptera, mainly Formicidae, constituted the majority of insects associated with open cacao flowers. However there was no evidence that these insects acted as pollinators. Recently initiated experiments for studying the effect of fungicides on midge populations developing in cacao husk heaps are described. The possibility of increasing natural pollination is also discussed
