Integrated monitoring of background pollution and its ecological effects in biosphere reserves

The national system of background monitoring of the state of the natural environmet which is being introduced in the USSR, serves the interests of both GEMS and the world network of biosphere reserves being established under the auspices of Unesco. The programme of background monitoring is bein implemented in all the biosphere reserves and background stations. The data emanating from routine observations and research allow the current state of the natural environment to be registered and, in future, will reveal deviations caused by anthropogenic activities.
