Comparative dynamics of tropical rain forest regeneration in French Guyana

Experimental forest management and associated research have been carried out at three sites in French Guyana, including a 25 ha clear-felled area. Research related to forest regeneration has touched on such aspects as reproductive ecology, the effects of hunting on seed dispersal, the structure and species composition of regrowth, organic matter inputs to the soil, changes in hydrological and erosion regimes under different management treatments. Suggested implications include the crucial role of litter in revegetation of compacted and charred soils (including the differential effect of Cecropia litter), the manipulation of dispersers to favour the establishment of desirable plants, and the use of knowledge on the morphological, biological, eco-physiological and ecological characteristics of the economically plant species to optimize biological performance.
