The international provenance trial of Cordia alliodora (R & P) Oken in Costa Rica

As part of the international provenance trials of Cordia alliodora coordinated by CFI, Oxford, results are presented for a four year old provenance trial at two sites in Costa Rica. Traits evaluated at the nursery stage were height, diameter at soil level, number of days to first germination, root length and shoot/root length ratio. Germination rate appeared to be under strong genetic control with dry zone provenances germinating and growing initially more quickly than wet zone provenances. There was no apparent correlation between nursery growth and growth in the field. Traits evaluated at the field stage were survival, height, DBH, stem form, forking, incidence of canker, bark type and thickness, flowering. Few significant differences were present between provenances due tolarge residual components of variation. The Limon (3377) provenance was highly susceptible to attack by a canker Puccinia cordiae. Two bark types were distinguished
