Proceedings

During 1980, a study was carried out in a semi-arid region where the goat population is mainly feeding on crop residues, agricultural by-products and on irrigated forages. Three levels of energy intake were tested: 1) 9.4 Mcal DE/day as alfalfa hay + 500 g concentrate, 2) 8.1 Mcal De/day as alfalfa hay and 3) 4.8 Mcal DE/day as sudangrass, oat hay or corn silage. The objective was to study the lactation curve performances of the goats as influenced by the different feeding levels. Accumulated and non-accumulated milk production curves for the whole lactation were computed for treatments and among goats in each treatment. It was found that lactation peak in goats occurred 5-6, 10-11 and 18-19 weeks post-kidding for each feeding level. There was a trend to delay the maximum milk production as the feeding level decreased. It was also observed that total milk production tended to have higher variations among goats of each treatment as the feeding value increased
