Assessment of the bentonite flocculation test for detecting tuberculosis in cattle :

The bentonite flocculation test was assessed as a rapid test for tuberculosis in Australian cattle. The test was carried out on cattle from herds in the southern part of the continent and on cattle from herds in the North. In the South 813 cattle were tuberculin tested twice within 90 days and bentonite flocculation tests were carried out on two and sometimes three samples of serum from each animal. In the North 183 cattle were tuberculin tested once and also bled three times over the test period. All these cattle were slaughtered regardless of the result of the tuberculin test. Before tuberculin testing the bentonite tests was positive for 19 per cent and 54 per cent of tuberculin reactors in southern and northern herds respectively. In southern cattle the test detected 27 per cent of those with tuberculous lesions and in northern cattle is detected 63 per cent of those with lesions. When blood samples were taken from southern cattle after tuberculin testing the number of reactors positive in the bentonite flocculation test rose to 71 per cent in the first test and to 89 per cent in the second test. However, the proportion of northern cattle positive in the bentonite test fell to 36 per cent after the tuberculin test. In 103 cattle in which lesions were examined histologically, the majority of animals with recent and active or progresssive lesions had the highest antibody titres before the injection of tuberculin. After injection of tuberculin, antibody titres increased in cattle with less active lesions. It was concluded that the bentonite flocculation test would only detect a high proportion of reactors 7 to 19 days after the injection of tuberculin. It could not therefore provide an alternative to the tuberculin test for the diagnosis of tuberculosis in cattle
