New fats by palm oil fractionation

Palm oil in Malaysia is probably one of the workd's fastest growing industry. The very large scale oil palm planting scheme and oil production has been followed by the erection of the largest and most modern refining industry ever seen. However, without the developments in fractionation technology, this would probably have never happened. Fractionation techniques' continues to develop so as to enable palm oil to reach new markets. In this respect, TIRTIAUX is proud to see specific products from its Malaysian plants becoming known and demanded from low cloud point olein to specific mid fractions further processed elsewhere for the manufacture of cocoa butter substitutes. It appears also that the competition in selling refined palm oil or just simply fractionated palm oil is getting so tight that the refiners may not have many choices other than penetrate these new specific markets. TIRTIAUX among others had the foresight of this situation and developed the concept of double fractionation years ago. After surveying the TIRTIAUX process and equipment, this paper will specifically talk of palm oil fractions and their physical and chemical properties as defined under the new techniques of total carbon analysis and glyceride composition by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)
