Climatic change, agriculture and the environment: some economics issues
Potential global climate change arising from increases in atmospheric CO2 and other trace gases is an issue of growing concern. The implication of climate change for human welfare arise from a range of possible effects including those on agriculture, forestry, hydrologic balances, sea levels, and fish and wildlife resources. As policymakers begin to debate abatement strategies, economic input is needed to provide perspective on the merits of abatement. This paper reviews current economic research on climate change, including challenges in performing assessments on a problem of this intertemporal complexity. Initial studies indicate both gainers and losers from climate change and significant costs for some abatement strategies. Research problems are also noted, including a lack of usable natural science information for some important longterm consequences
