Current and future rust research at CIMMYT

The major objetives of the Rust Research Program at CIMMYT are to provide a strong back-up support to the various breeding programs, namely Bread Wheat, Durum Wheat and Triticale, in the selection of broadly based resistant germplasm. The current research activities can be summarized as follows: 1) Pathogenicity variation investigations in Mexican Puccinia graminis tritici and Puccinia recondita tritici populations; 2) Pathogenicity variation investigation at global level with the aid of the International Disease Trap Nursery (IDTN); 3) Field Screenig; 4) Breeding for resistance; 5) Future research additions which include: study of the pathogenicity variation in Puccinia striiformis in Mexico; long term of rust pathotypes; genetics of resistance to the leaf rust in certain wheat varieties; genetics or slow rusting to the leaf rust; and epidemiology of the leaf rust in Mexico (ACH)
