Biosafety in agricultural technology

One of the major issues that will affects successful applications of biotechnology to agriculture is the regulatory climate governing the release of new products. This paper describes the effect that biotecnology is having on regulatory systems in several countries. In terms of field releases, there have been over 200 small-scale releases in 17 countries, with no untoward effects. The first commercial releases of new, genetically engineered plant varieties are expected within the next 2 years. The national agricultural research systems are establishing biosafety systems, generally based on guidelines similar to those which have been endorsed by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). There is increasing interest in regional cooperation in preparing guidelines suitable for various geographic and ecological regions
