Broad spectrum virus resistance in Solanum brevidens and its introduction by protoplast fusion to cultivated potato

In the study reported in this paper, Solanum brevidens developed no obvious disease symptoms when inoculated with potato virus Y (PVY) and potato virus X (PVX), and both viruses reached only a low virus titre, apparently because relatively few cells became infected.
