Methods used for rehabilitating old cacao farms in Nigeria

Cacao was first introduced into Nigeria in 1874. Since then, Nigeria has become the second largest producer of mers grew cacao on 1,100,000acres in Western Nigeria which produced about 95% of Nigeria cocoa. Although total cocoa production has been increasing, thousands of acres of Nigeria cacao farms, have, however, became a wasting asset as a result of old age, poor management and severe mirid and cocoa swollen shoot virus disease attacking separately or in combination. The combined effects of the above listed factors have rendered many cocoa farms derelict especially in Ibadan and Abeokuta provinces of the Western State of Nigeria. The areas of mass infection (AMI), where control measures and inspection of cocoa farms suffering from the swollen shoot disease have been abandoned, are also in these two provinces. The AMI make up one seventh of the cocoa growing areas of the Western State of Nigeria. Although cacao cultivation spread in Ondo province in the 1940’s, some areas notably around Igunshin in Ondo and Ikere-Ekiti in Ekiti Divisions respectively, would need to be considered for rehabilitation. Different methods can be used for rehabilitating old cacao farms. Some of those used in Nigeria are discussed in this article.
