The dynamics of Rhizophora racemosa Meyer, forests on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica

The structure and dynamics of a stand of R. racemosa in the Tivives mangrove forest was investigated by quadrat analysis at a 1-ha plot over the period October 1984 to July 1988. Total plant density was 2024 per hectare, with 619 trees of diameter at breast height (d.b.h.) minor than 5 cm. The size class distribution was in a typical J-shaped curve. Total basal area (b.a.) was 17.43 m2/ha, and annual b.a. increment 0.22 m2/ha. B.a. increment varied with diameter size class (range 1.10-6.85 m2/ha p.a.) and crown category, being generally higher in larger diameter and dominant trees. During 43 months of study only two small trees died. Seedling density, establishment and mortality was monitored for 24 months of the study. Density fluctuated according to the season and the seedling crop size. Maximum values were 7.0 seedlings/m2. The species showed a clear clumped distribution in size classes of d.b.h. minor than 15 cm.
