An overview of recent trends in productivity of major cereals around the world, especially in developing countries, is made and the scope for continuance of these trends and the initiation of new ones is speculated upon. The general conclusion is cautiously optimistic in aggregate terms while pessimistic about particular crops in particular ecologies
