Coberturas vivas para el manejo de malezas e insectos, dentro de sistemas agrícolas sostenibles

Living mulches for managing weeds and insects within sustainable agricultural systems. CATIE's experiences on the use of living mulches for managing weeds and insects include research on 20 plant species, especially leguminous ones. They were tested for both perennial (cacao, peach palm, plantains, and coffee) and annual crops (corn and tomatoes). Some mulches offer a good potential for developing sustainable agricultural systems, since they are effective in suppressing weeds or decimating insect pests, and provide satisfactory economic returns. Perennial peanuts (Arachis pintoi) associated with several crops, and mucuna (Mucuna deeringiana) in corn, have withstood in providing good yields and economic returns. There are also disadvantages with particular species, because of their slow rate and high costs of establishment, as well as their competitive interactions with the crops, that deserve further research.
