Stem pitting in cocoa (Theobroma cacao)
Various forms of swellings were found on the chupon growth of adult cocoa trees. Where the stems were swollen, the phloem was thicker than normal and had peg-like processes which protruded into pits in the xylem. Anatomical investigations showed that the tissues were disorganised and these sites. The number of affected trees in the field plots was observed to increase with time and a positional association was demonstrated. The cause of these abnormalities has not been determined
