Morphology and anatomy of two varieties of Begonia cucullata (Begoniaceae), marketed as ‘agrial’ in Paraguay

Begonia cucullata var. cucullata and B. cucullata var. arenosícola are known as «agrial» in Paraguay and employed as anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, and in the treatment of pharyngitis and stomatitis. Begonia cucullata var. cucullata is less than a metre tall and has red stems, leaves dark green in the upperside and red in the underside, epidermis with symmetric glandular trichomes and anomocytic stomata. Begonia cucullata var. arenosicola is usually taller than a metre and presents light green coloured stems and leaves dark green in the upperside and light green in the underside, epidermis with asimetric glandular trichomes and both anomocytic and anisocytic stomata. Diagnostic characters are provided for the identification of the two varieties of “agrial”
