Family farming, a key factor in strengthening tourism projects of the Mbyá-Guaraní communities in the Iryapú Jungle, Misiones

In the Iryapú Jungle (Puerto Iguazú, Argentina), four Mbyá-Guaraní communities develop community-based tourism proposals. This has allowed them to diversify their economies in a context of territorial pressures against their subsistence. During 2020, they managed to strengthen the self-management of their projects by creating the Mbyá Association in Tourism. From a theoretical approach, this paper seeks to analyse the factors that made its creation possible, examining its impact on the visibility and revaluation of the territory. The information obtained from the consultation of specialised literature and an in-depth interview was then contrasted with the results of the fieldwork. This evidence shows that family farming is one of the main factors of their livelihood that allowed them to focus on reorganizing their tourism proposal. This highlights the importance of the territory as a fundamental variable for the endogenous development of their projects.
