Specific morphological features of the uterus of the coypu (Myocastor coypus): Observations on the morphology of the uterus of the coypu (Myocastor coypus)

The coypu has a double uterus, and therefore presents anatomical differences from other mammals in the reproductive tract. The objective of this work was to expand knowledge about the morphology of the uterus of the coypu in sexual maturity by identifying and characterizing specific features of the uterine horns and the transition zone of the uterine cervix. Eighteen uteri were analyzed by routine histological techniques. Analysis of the serial sections allowed identification of a cranial projection of the uterine wall in the segment of the utero-tubal junctions, an incomplete longitudinal mucosal fold in the cranial lumen of the uterine horns, numerous parietal cul-de-sac and transverse folds of the endometrium, and the presence of a uterus-cervical transition segment. The uterus of the coypu presents morphological differences similar to those of other animals and specific microanatomical features.
