MAIZE VARIETIES WITH HIGH CONTENT OF BETA-CAROTENS

In order to select varieties of yellow grain corn with high content of beta-carotene, 30 experiments were planted in fields of collaborating farmers and the Experimental Station of El Ejido, Republic of Panama in the years 2014, 2016 and 2017. The synthetics evaluated were obtained from the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). In the first year, 12 varieties of high carotene content were received and two normal grain controls were included in a trial planted on two sowing dates in El Ejido (recommended sowing and late sowing). In 2015, was received from CIMMYT, seeds of the four best varieties and these were multiplied. In 2016 and 2017 two trials were prepared and planted in plots provided by producers from different localities in the country (Azuero, Soná and Río Sereno). The design used was Alfa Lattice 3 x 4 and 3 x 3 (12 and 9 treatments, respectively), with three repetitions. The experimental plots consisted of two rows of 5,20 m long separated at 0,75 m between rows. The population oscillated between 5,33 and 6,66 plants.m-2. The agronomic management carried out was according to what was recommended by the Maize Project of the institute. The analyzes of variance of all the tests were carried out and they showed statistical differences between cultivars. High percentages of repeatability and low coefficients of variation were obtained. The adaptability and stability of the varieties was measured with the use of Biplot SReg analysis. After three years of evaluation it was determined that the variety HPMARKERSYNG1F1 - # / HPMARKERSYNG2F1 - # - S1 (PROA-04) presented a yield of 5,46 t.ha-1, superior to the variety Guararé-8128 and similar to the IDIAP-MV-0706 variety and surpassed by the IDIAP-MV-1102. This new fortified variety was characterized by its good performance in the general average of all localities with good agronomic characteristics.

This new fortified variety was characterized by its good performance in the general average of all localities with good agronomic characteristics.
