RETRO-BREEDING BETWEEN PANAMANIANS BEANS CULTIVARS AND HIGH-CONTENT IRON SOURCES

Bean lines (Phaseolus vulgaris) were generated from 31 populations, in similar farmer’s creole bean characteristics, with pink grain color, greater yields, better tolerance to web blight (Thanatephorus cucumeris, (Frank), Donk) and similar precocity. Using an alpha-lattice design for two years the generated bean lines were evaluated. Due to their agronomic characteristics, 500 lines were selected in the first year, and later the best 140 lines. In the second year of the evaluation, the Minimum Significant Difference for yield was 0,5075 and lines with yields higher than 1,1515 t ha-1 exceeded the producer's creole pink variety and surpassing the variety IDIAP R2 with 1,7682 t ha-1. A total of 22 lines resulted with a yield of more than 1,2 t ha-1, statistically outperforming the creole pink. It was calculated the repeatability or heritability that indicates the precision of the experiment and how much is the genetic gain obtained for each evaluated variable, resulting greater for the yield, days to flowering, days to physiological maturity with values of 0,4; 0,94 and 0,95; respectively. These values are considered as medium and high for the precision of the experiment. The content of iron in the lines was analyzed and no line exceeded 75 ppm so that it can be considered as a biofortified line.
