ASOPEGA’S CATTLEMEN PERCEPTIONS ABOUT BOVINE RACIAL OPTIONS, GUALACA - PANAMA

The objective was to identify, analyze and compare ASOPEGA’s cattlemen perceptions about the available bovine racial options. Participative research methodology was used. It was identify 27 traits for the analysis and was estimated the importance as the relationships among them (demand) and the degree which each ones contribute (offer). The demand was qualified in: very important=1, moderately important=2 and not important=3, and the offer in: very good=1, intermediate=2 and deficient=3. Data were analyzed by non-parametric methods. Cattlemen were grouped by age in: young-medium and medium-old; farm size in: Size 1 (>50 ha), Size 2 (26-50 ha) and Size 3 (<26 ha). And genetic group in: beef, dairy and synthetic. According to age, there was no differences in the importance of the demand traits like tick tolerance (P<0,10) and internal parasites (P<0,50). The main priority in the demand for the young-medium age group was grazing capacity and for the medium-old age group was weaning weight. According to the farm size, there was no differences in tick tolerance (P<0,268) and Dermatobia hominis (P<0.268). For offer traits there was no difference among genetic groups in feed conversion (P<0,391) and humidity tolerance (P<0,407). The importance of demand traits was similar between age groups (59,3% of the traits) and do not coincide respect to farm size (33,3% of the traits). The offer traits for genetic group at least reach 33,3% of the expectations.
