RETENTION OF PHOSPHORUS IN SOILS DEDICATED TO MAIZE CULTIVATION IN AZUERO REGION

The objective of this research was to estimate the equivalent fertilizer dose to apply on soils dedicated to maize crop, in order to reach the optimum phosphorus concentration for this crop, in alfisol and inceptisol soils of the Azuero region. Soil samples were taken from eight localities in the corn region of Los Santos province. To each sample, a complete physical-chemical characterization was made and the Langmuir isotherm was also generated. The maximum adsorption capacity of each soil sample was calculated to retain phosphates (amount), soluble phosphates in the soil solution (intensity), and the property of a soil to resist changes in the concentration of phosphorus in solution or energy of retention (capacity). Inceptisol soil of Guararé locality, adsorbed the highest amount of phosphorus with 943,1 mg.kg-1 followed by Pedasi alfisol and San José inceptisol, with values of 794,7 and 788,3 mg.kg-1, respectively. Inceptisol soils from Guararé and San José localities, as well as alfisols from El Ejido and Pedasí, showed higher levels of retention energy with values of 1,85; 1,75; 0,59 and 0,46; respectively. For maize crop, the equivalent dose to reach optimum phosphorus concentration in soils was found in Llano Abajo inceptisol soil, being 202,8 kg.ha-1.
