Bud Rot, Sudden Wilt, Red Ring and Lethal Wilt of oil palm in the Americas
This paper presents the four more serious diseases in the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.), that are being a problem in America, affecting the development of the crop. They are widely spread in all the tropical countries, where there have been important increases in the planted area. For each one of them it is presented information about its biology, economic importance, epidemiology, detection, control and future research. The main emphasis is in bud rot, the one that has been responsible for the losses of thousands of hectares, and the one in which recently there have been very interesting advances in the identification of its causal agent.
