Technological perspectives for the palm sector

The current area planted with palm oil meets traditional demands for its product (food, soaps, concentrates) and biofuels ( 90% mixture of fossil diesel and 10% palm biodiesel that will be in force in 2010) with a surplus for the external market which will continue to increase along with the area planted. This means rising to the challenge of exporting products with a greater value added instead of primary materials. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development proposed to those chains, chosen for the social impact, exporting capacity and income generation, that they set up research and technological agendas for their promissory products in such a way that they serve as a reference point for the formulation and approval of proposals financed by the State and for working on competitiveness agreements. The palm sector did exactly this and chose red olein for which it developed a chain model that is contained in this document.
