The Energy balance in the production of palm oil biodiesel two cases of studies : Brazil and Colombia

The use of the biodiésel produced through the transesterification of vegetable oils with methanol and ethanol is seen as an interesting alternative. The energy output/input relation in biodiésel production life cycle can be an important index for the techno economical and environmental feasibility evaluation of biodiésel production out of different oleaginous plants. Due to the increasing environmental concerns related to the emissions of fuel derived atmospheric pollutants alternative sources of energy have been receiving greater attention. This work intends to carry out the energy analysis in the production of the oil palm biodiésel taking the conditions of Brazil and Colombia into account and show the differences between the results attained for both cases. The objective of this work is also to carry out the energy analysis of Palm Oil biodiésel production, considering the methyl route, for Brazilian and Colombian conditions. This paper presents the results of this analysis and discusses the differences between the results of the two case studies. The output/input energy relation for evaluated case studies is in the range 6-8.
