New opportunities for strategically positioning palm oil in the world market

Palm oil has become the world?s most produced and traded vegetable oil, which poses for this agroindustry and its producers the challenge of undertaking a new leadership role in the market of oils and fats. The fact that the oil palm agroindustry has been the world?s most efficient source of oil production has no doubt contributed to this achievement. Additionally, palm oil is socially and environmentally sustainable, it is healthy, with a versatility that allows for multiple uses, and it is an optimal solution to substitute those soft vegetable oils, such as soy, colza or sunflower oils, that are subjected to partial hydrogenation to harden them and make them more stable. This partial hydrogenation results in the formation of trans fatty acids which have been shown to be harmful to human health through the consumption of many food products. Finally, and no less important, the oil palm agroindustry is an optimal source of energy generation and production of clean, renewable biofuels. In fact, around these topics, which are very sensitive and vital for humankind, new paradigms are being forged in this agroindustry, which needs to continue contributing significantly to the economic growth and to the welfare of the population, particularly in the producing countries. To further strengthen the promising prospects of the oil palm industry, it is imperative to ensure that its development and expansion, locally and internationally, be done within an scenario of improved productivity and competitiveness to counteract the fast productivity growth achieved in the last few years by other short cycle oilseeds. To reach this purpose, it is essential to have a positive attitude toward innovation in the plantation, in the processing, in marketing and in the business administration. It is also essential to strengthen the cooperation ties between public and private, domestic and international agents involved in oil palm activities.
