Presence of "Bud Rot Diseases" in oil palm at Nursery Stages

Actually the oil palm "Bud rot" is the principal limiting factor for oil palm farmers in Tumaco - Colombia, because there is not a recovering process of this disease and the "Bud rot" development has reached 100 per cent incidence level in many local areas since 2005, for this reason many farmers have left their oil palm crops. In other regions of Colombia and America, the earliest symptoms of "Bud rot", occur in two or more years old palms, otherwise in Tumaco this situation is different, because infection is possible at nursery palms of six months old. The presence of "Bud rot" in young palms has made that a most accurate symptom description be developed. The first symptoms consist in a brown lesson at the upper region of the spear. When the spear opens, it is possible to identify that the lower foliages at the same side of the lesson are brown, this is the traditional symptom. The spears that follow the initial infected spear, present more severe symptoms, advancing to crater stage, where bud is rotten. When a palm is dissected is possible to "Bud rot" to advance into the vascular tissues and primordial foliages. The presence of "Bud rot" at nursery stage will let advance in the knowledge of this disease
