Nutraceuticals : current Issue in the Pipoc 2007

In the International Palm Oil Congress, Pipoc 2007, about 25 percent of all talks and posters of the Product Development and Nutrition conference showed the results of the physiological effects of nutraceuticals derived from oil palm subproducts. Nutraceuticals, known as functionals, are those foods or compounds that, in addition to their nutritional component, offer health benefits and desirable physiological effects, which have been scientifically documented. Nutraceuticals are usually used in nutritional blends and by the pharmaceutical industry. It is estimated that sales of functional foods will reach USD $49.000 by 2010 in the United States. This paper summarizes the main findings of the Pipoc 2007 conference related to the nutraceutical properties of some components of palm oil and some subproducts of the oil palm agroindustry. Among them, it is worthy to mention the recovery and concentration of phenolic antioxidants from palm oil mill effluents. Also, the relationship between supplementation with tocotrienols (vitamin E) and carotenes from palm oil and a better prognosis of cardiovascular disease, breast and prostate cancer, pancreatitis and cystic fibrosis, among others
