Biotechnology in the oil palm crop : remarkable Aspects in PIPOC 2007

Inside the internationalization activities of Cenipalma, from 26 to 30 August, a technical mission, together with a group of oil palm growers, participated in the International Palm Oil Congress (Pipoc 2007). For this reason, and attending to the communication strategy of Cenipalma that looks for keeping informed the Colombian oil palm sector about technological advances showed in this kind of events, here it is presented a short review related to the biotechnology in the oil palm crop and the current situation of Cenipalma in this area of knowledge. Ten conferences and 24 posters were presented. Topics included: (i) use of transgenics for multiple purposes, including those of interest for pharmaceutical and medical industries; (ii) the necessity of transgenics in agriculture, in particular, in order to surpass phytopathological problems; (iii) isolation of genes of interest (iv) tissue culture and study of aberrant plants resulting of in vitro procedures; (v) use of molecular markers to support characterization of genetic diversity and marker assisted selection; and (vi) developments and applications of bioinformatics
