Water use efficiency in an oil palm crop. Economic importance of Its optimization

The northern oil palm area of Colombia presents low rainfall conditions therefore it is necessary to use irrigation at least five months during the year. The most common irrigation system used in this area is the surface method, which given its inefficiency, it doesn't allow supplementing the low environmental supply. The project aimed at quantifying the water use efficiency in a representative oil palm crop of the northern area, getting a total value of 5,8 percent, representing a conduction efficiency of 35,6 percent and 16,1 percent of application. Moreover, other irrigation alternatives were assessed from the technical and economic standpoints, other surface irrigation application and canal lining, in order to determine potential efficiency conditions
