Cogeneration with oil palm biomass in the Colombian electricity system: barriers, prospects and opportunities

Colombian regulatory framework on electric grid restricts the source diversification and the inclusion of the “small power plant” as agroindustrial companies, including palm oil and sugar cane. Those are one of the most important chains in the country which should incorporate safe and promising cogeneration business based on the biomass availability to generate energy surplus. This article reviews and compares international successful cogeneration system, based on biomass waste, in order to identify bioenergy opportunities to apply distributed generation on electric Colombian market.
