FR 42. Preweaning growth in West African sheep

Preweaning growth was evaluated on a high breed ovine West African flock, in tropical dry forest environment, grazing on B. decumbens (30 %), D. swazilandensis (30%) and H. rufa (60%); stocking rate was equivalent to 16 anim/ha. Variance of birth weight (PN), weaning weight (PD) and preweaning growth weight (GDPRD) were analized by a least square method, considering the effects of sex (M,H); type of birth (TP): simple (Ps) or multiple (Pm); season of birth (EN): rainy (LL), transcision (T) and dry (S); year of birth (AÑO): 93, 94 y 95; interactions, age (EMP) and weight (PMP) at lambing mother and age at weaning lambs (ED) as covariables. Adjusted average of PN, PD and GDPRD were 2.87 kg, 12.62 kg and 99.31 g respectively. PN was higher (P<.05) for M. Lambs born from Ps had higher PN, PD and GDPRD (P<.01). PN (P<.05) and PD (P<.01) were higher in T. AÑO affected PN (P<.01) and GDPRD (P<.05). PMP affected PN, PD and GDPRD (P<.01). EMP affected PD (P<.05); and EDC affected PD (P<.05) and GDPRD (P<.01). The most significant factors were TP, EN and PMP.
