Genetic and environmental factors that affect litter traits in two pig farms in Venezuela

Litter characteristics were evaluated: number of piglets born live (NV), weight at birth (PN), weight at 21 days (P21), number weaned (LD) and weight at weaning (PD), in two farms (A , B), which produce young breeding pigs. The least squares analyzes included in the model the breed [R: Large White (LW), Duroc (D), Hampshire (H), Landrace (L) in A; and LW, L and Line 24 (L24) in B]; month of birth (M: 1,… 12); year of birth (AN: A = 1990-92; B = 1985-92); calving number (PN: 1 to 5 in A and 1 to 8 in B); parent within race (P / R); as covariates: NV for PN and LD for PD and for P21. The adjusted means were: NV: 8.69 and 8.92; PN, 13.79 and 13.74 kg; P21, 56.68 and 54.99 kg; LD, 7.65 and 8.56; PD64.52 and 58.88 kg. LW and L excelled in most analyzes, excluding PN adjusted for NV, in which LW was the worst. The effect of M on NV and PN was not significant. The monthly averages of LD, P21 and PD varied greatly between farms, not finding a month or period of months longer. In A, AN affected NV, LD, PD and PD adjusted for LD; while in B, it affected PN adjusted for NV, and P21 and PD adjusted for LD. NP influenced all traits, intermediate calvings being the best. There was P / R influence on some characteristics. The estimated inheritance indices ranged from 0.01 to 0.16. The correlations between PN and NV, P21 and LD, and PD and LD were positive and significant. Regression values (A and B) of 1.29 and 1.22 were obtained for PN on NV and 6.06 kg for PD on LD.

The correlations between PN and NV, P21 and LD, and PD and LD were positive and significant. Regression values (A and B) of 1.29 and 1.22 were obtained for PN on NV and 6.06 kg for PD on LD.
