Headlines (00:00-00:32) 2. The Nurses Association of Jamaica caused disarray in hospitals today after taking strike action over the administrative reform policy of the government concerning their salaries. Gary Allen is interviewed by Leslie Goffe (00:33-02:03) 3. The Haitian Parliament has decided against action which could have led to the toppling of the government of President Aristide. After three weeks of mounting tension over the motion of no-confidence in Prime Minister Rene Preval, the Chamber of Deputies postponed the vote against the prime minister. Michael Norton reports from Port-au-Prince (02:04-04:21) 4. The report recaps the comments made by US Congressman Phil Crane yesterday as he attempted to alleviate the fears of the Caribbean rum producers over the proposed US reduction of duties on rum imports from Latin America. Despite these assurances, Patrick Meyers, Chairman of the Barbados Rum Producers Association states that the Caribbean stands to lose many markets in the US (04:22-08:12) 5. Pressure is mounting on the US to lift its 30 year trade embargo against Cuba. According to Alicia Torres, Executive Director of the Washington-based Cuba-American Committee, the Committee is in support of President Fidel Castro’s bid to have the embargo removed (08:13-11:12) 6. The future of the Caribbean defence forces is examined and the Chief of Staff of Jamaica Defence Force states that there is enough justification for their continued existence. Commander Peter Brady comments on the role of the Defence Force of Jamaica (11:13-14:44) 2017-04-24T14:49:21Z 2017-04-24T14:49:21Z 1991-09-05 Recording, oral CAR0834 http://hdl.handle.net/2139/44110 en The BBC Caribbean Archives Collection 1988 - 2011 Copyright British Broadcasting Corporation Access to this collection is available on site at the Main Library, Mona Campus (main.library@uwimona.edu.jm), Jamaica and The Alma Jordan Library (wimail@sta.uwi.edu), St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago.
