Caribbean Report 07-02-1990

The program reports on an organised bombing campaign in Guyana after the bomb squad detonated an explosive device on the compound of the Supreme Court. Secondly, the intentions of the Dominican Republic remain unclear on the subject of banana exports to Europe. The ACP Secretary General and Dominica’s ambassador to Brussels met with the Republic’s European representative, who was awaiting instructions from Santo Domingo. Following the Financial Market news, the Haitian opposition leaders threaten to boycott the planned elections unless the government releases the jailed opponents, changes the electoral timetable and allow the exiled leaders to return to Haiti. The removal of General Prosper Avril is demanded by the exiled leaders before they agree to participate in the planned elections. The report ends with the arrival of the English cricket team in St. Lucia and an update on the fitness of Ricardo Elcock who sustained a back injury.
