_______________ YIELD AND ITS COMPONENTS GENETIC GAINS UNDER NORMAL AND LIMITED IRRIGATION OF BREAD WHEAT VARIETIES RELEASED IN MEXICO SINCE 1940 TO 2015. ABSTRACT: The aim of this investigation was to assess a group of bread varieties, released in a period of 67 years, tested under two irrigation levels, two sowing dates in two different locations in order to get an idea of the genetic gains achieved and the interactions between genotypes and certain environmental factors. The experiments were established under a completely randomized block split-split plot design with four factors: irrigation regime, location, sowing date, and genotype. The imited irrigation effect on grain yield increased with the effect of late sowing due to the occurrence of high temperatures during grain filling period. The most affected yield components by water deficit were aerial biomass, spikes per square meter, and grains per square meter; because of sowing late the most affected were thousand kernel weight, aerial biomass, and grains per square meter in Celaya, and aerial biomass and spikes per square meter in Montecillo. The yield genetic gain on the average was 1.21 % annually (41.77 kg ha-1) which signified an accumulated increase of 2.8 t ha-1 in 67 years. Under normal irrigation, the rate of progress of 1.10 % was lower than for limited irrigation (1.35 %), indicating that in the future yield could be maintained with less water use, moreover the same actual water volume could permit to widen the cultivated area. Genetic gain was better for the second sowing date (with high temperatures) than for the first one. Traits of modern genotypes changed significantly respect to old ones and the characters that have contributed continuously to grain yield are chlorophyll content, thousand kernel weight, grain filling rate, and number of grains per square meter. ‘Borlaug 100 F2014’, ‘Bacorehuis F2015’, and ‘Baviacora M92’ were the genotypes that diminished their yield the least under limited irrigation while ‘Nana F2007’ performed the best under heat stress in Celaya.
