Conventional pyrolysis: a biased technique for providing structural information on humic substances?
Aquatic and terrestrial humic substances consist of two main fractions: fulvic acid and humic acid. These fractions are operationally defined, based on solubil- ity in alkalis and acids. This lack of a proper chemical definition has resulted in misinterpretations, and despite humus studies having a history of more than 200 years, their nature is still unknown and subject to debate.
