High severity wildfires destroy soil organic matter, causing a drastic alteration of carbon (C) cycling, and are followed by strong runoff and erosion events. Post-fire straw mulch has been used to mitigate soil erosion, however, no studies have assessed the effects of the combined application of straw, as tool to avoid soil erosion, with biochar (pyrolised biomass) for restoration of the soil C lost to the atmosphere. In september 2017, a total of 40 microplots (1 m2) were installed in two areas of southern Portugal and Spain where wildfires burnt at high and moderate severity (sandy and loamy soils), respectively. Soil and sediment samples were collected to assess soil erosion and C stocks via TG-DSC, NMR and analytical pyrolisis. Treatments were: Burned (controls), Brushed (ash and stones removed), Straw mulch (at a rate of 1 Mg ha-1), Straw+Biochar (1+15 Mg ha-1 ), Pine slash and Marine algae (both at 8 Mg ha-1 Preliminary results during the first post-fire year show that Straw and Straw+Biochar mulch strongly reduced soil erosion by 67-60% compared to the Burned or Brushed plots. The latter two did not differ from each other. Soil erosion in the Pine slash and Marine algae treatments was 30-40% lower than in the Burned plots. These findings indicate that applying both Straw together with Biochar can be an effective way to increase not only the labile soil organic matter fraction (derived from mulch itself) and to retain more recalcitrant native soil organic matter fractions (derived from the lack of erosion,) but also to increase recalcitrant organic matter by the input of biochar. Future post-fire soil restoration programs may decide to use straw mulch, when aiming to mitigate post-fire soil erosion. Equally they may combine straw and biochar application, if besides of mitigating soil erosion, it is intended to restore the soil carbon stocks, lost to the atmosphere and thus to improve soil quality in moderate and high severity burned areas.
