White paper on Clean, safeand efficient energy

We are living a period of radical transformations in the way in which we aim at producing the energy we need. The gradually increasing environmental impact of the production of energy employing conventional sources (coal, oil, gas, nuclear fission...) and the consequences it has on our lives, is making an everyday larger amount of people aware of the need to find alternative clean ways to obtain power. In this regard, public opinions around the world are increasingly demanding solutions to either sequestrate or stop the generation of harmful byproducts, be they the gases responsible for the greenhouse effect, which is at the origin of the climate change, or the toxic compounds that are increasingly affecting public health, as evidenced in the growing number ofrespiratory diseases in urban populations. This change of perception is reflecting in energy transition policies, which are expected to keep on being promoted in the future, that favor the development of renewable energy sources that can provide a solution to these problems[1]. This chapter presents an analysis of the challenges and opportunities that the field of renewable energy production pose to our society. It is also about how the CSIC can contribute to tackle theformer and take advantage of the latter, in orderto position itself as a world leader in this field.
