The contrasting future for the lauric oils market.

The market for lauric oils has undergone significant growth over the last 20 years, with volume produced increasing by 72 percent between 1975 and 1995 to exceed 5 Mt. Trade in the product has almost doubled, reaching 2.5 Mt in 1995. The situation for coconut oil and palm kernel oil is explored. Recent developments in their use are compared with the fundamental trends that characterize supplies. Whilst uses and marketing opportunities appear promising, problems with chronic supply shortages and excessive supply fluctuations threaten sustained growth in the future.
